Opal
Opal Origin
Opal is a product of the semi-desert "outback" of Australia. In such areas, seasonal rainfall saturates the dry surface. The rainwater seeps into the ancient subterranean rocks, bringing with it dissolved silica (a compound of silicon and oxygen).
During droughts, most of the water evaporates, leaving deposits of solid silica between rock crevices and layers of sedimentary rock beneath the earth. The silica deposits form opals.
